A FEW RULES TO LIVE BY

I just finished reading Michael Pollan's new book "Food Rules: An Eater's Manual." There were several interesting insights that I felt were appropriate to post on our blog!

1. Eat only foods that are cooked by humans.
  • If you are going to let other people cook for you, you're much better off if they are other humans, rather than corporations. Generally, corporations use too much salt, fat, and sugar, as well as preservatives, colorings, and other biological novelties. They also aim for IMMORTALITY in their products. Treat restaurant meals as special occasions and cook mostly with other humans.

2. If you have the space, buy a freezer.

  • When you find a good source of pasteurized meat, you'll want to buy it in quantity. Buying meat in bulk is one way to eat well on a budget. A chest freezer is surprisingly inexpensive to operate, because they aren't opened nearly enough as the one in your refrigerator. A freezer will enable you to stock up on food from the farmers' market, and encourage you to buy produce in bulk at the height of the season, when it is most abundant and therefore cheapest. AND FREEZING DOES NOT SIGNIFICANTLY DIMINISH THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF PRODUCE.

3. Spend as much time enjoying the meal as it took to prepare it.

  • Think of all the fun we have at cooking club and learn to appreciate your food!

4. COOK.

  • If you can't afford a private cook or chef, you need to be the cook! By letting other people cook for you means losing control over your eating life, the portions and ingredients. Cooking for yourself is the only sure way to take control of your diet from scientists and food processors, and to guarantee your not eating unhealthy oils, high-fructose corn syrup, and excessive salt. NOT SURPRISINGLY, THE DECLINE OF HOME COOKING CLOSELY PARALLELS THE RISE IN OBESITY, AND RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT PEOPLE WHO COOK ARE MORE LIKELY TO EAT A HEALTHY DIET.

Thought of the day: While we might not be the next Julia Child or Rachael Ray, we strive to make our homes a healthier place by preparing home-cooked meals!
