We learn by doing, and there's no way around it. There is no stand-in for standing in your own kitchen, a trial by fire, literally. You can buy it in a box; you can watch someone else make it for you on TV. But there's no replacement for what happens when we make something with our own hands, directed by our own senses, motivated by our own love for the people we're serving.

-"Bread and Wine" by Shauna Niequist

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Members must follow all USDA guidelines. Please go to www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/index.asp for the safety guidelines.

2. The Domestic Divas Cooking Club will meet on the first Wednesday of the month at Trinity Lutheran unless another date/time/place is specified by the coordinator. We will begin at 8:30 am sharp so if you need time to unload/unpack, please arrive earlier to do so. You can also drop your stuff off at the church the day before cooking club during normal business hours.

3. Prep work tasks are required by ALL members. This is only fair to the people that work hard to coordinate cooking club. Consequences for missed prep work will be determined by the coordinator.

4. A 30-day notice is required for all members who choose not to participate in cooking club for a month or longer period of time.

5. If you need to miss an entire day, you will be required to assemble 1-2 meals on your own. While I understand that circumstances can occur to anyone, this is only fair to everyone who participates. If you are sick and the group cannot complete all the meals in a fair and timely manner, you may be required to assemble a meal at a later date.

6. If you need to miss any amount of time on cooking club day, you must contact the coordinator via text or phone call. Please contact me directly instead of having someone else spread the word that you won't be there.

7. If a funeral were to take place on cooking club day, our next cooking date would be the next available date (Thursday or Friday). The same would pertain to a snow day (closed schools). Please keep this in mind when planning events, etc. While this would be a rare occurrence, it could still happen.

8. Please do not schedule appointments on cooking day. The only exception to leave should be to pick up/drop off children. We also do not know when we will be done for sure so it it best not to schedule anything until after 3 pm on cooking day.

9. The maximum number of cooking club members is eight. This ensures a safe and comfortable work environment.

10. Members may be required to do additional tasks such as setting up, grocery shopping, label making, washing towels, etc.

11. Cooking club will not meet in January, April, June, July, or August.

12. All checks will be due at each cooking club for the next month. For example, when we meet in September, everyone is required to bring their check for October. This is only fair to the coordinator who does the shopping and bills can range up to $800. This is a lot of money for one person to fork out (even if they get reimbursed) and I would not expect someone else to do that for me.

13. If you cannot be there on cooking day, please designate someone to put your meals away or to pick up meals. It is extremely helpful if you are gone, to send someone (friend, family member, spouse) to pick up the meals when they are done. This helps to make sure all the meals are there and they get put away. The coordinator can send a text to the person designated to pick up meals.

14. I will be shopping on the Thursday or Friday before Cooking Club. Prep work will be available Sunday and Monday. Members must pick up from me or else arrange to meet somewhere. It is too much running around to drop off prep work for people. I can leave the prep at the church on Tuesday during set-up but please be aware of the church hours. If you need or want your prep work earlier, please contact me to try to figure out shopping and pick-up.

15. A donation to the church will be made each cooking month. We will also provide a ministry meal if time and budget allows.

16. As a member of the Domestic Divas, I agree to follow these rules.

A Note from Penzey's Spices

OK-I love Penzey's Spices.  I stock up everytime I go to Appleton.  I especially love the Blue Poppy Seeds, Pure Vanilla, and Cocoa.  Besides the spices, I love the newsletter that I get from them.  This is what Bill had to say:

Kindness works

Our years of selling spices have taught us that cooking is not a one size fits all world:  far from it.  We've learned the wonder of cooking lies in the incredible diversity of the people who cook, and the incredible variety of food they cook.  Over the years we have come to understand for all of our differences, for the tremendous variety of what we cook, people who cook have something in common.  THEY CARE ENOUGH TO MAKE THE LIVES OF THOSE AROUND THEM BETTER.  The research shows that kindness of cooks works.  People who share dinner together at the kitchen table go on to share a brighter future.  A brighter future made possible by people with the kindness to build it one meal at a time.  It is this kindness we celebrate, this kindness we hope to spread, this kindness that makes all who cook ONE.  We hope to share the greater family of human kindness that we've found all cooks belong to.  Come along and join us.  Be ONE.

Cooking is awesome; it is tasty food and so much more.  Cooking starts a healing inside us that flows to those around us, spreads out into our communities, and ultimately shapes the world in a very positive way.  For so many of us cooking really did start with us valuing ourselves.  Cooking gets compliments and compliments heal.  We can move past that beginning stage of cooking for compliments and taking that next step to sharing what we have with those around us.  There are many paths to that next step, but none more clear and easy to see the value in finding someone you can love even more than you love yourself.  True Love is at the heart of cooking.
